A Teacher, Not A Preacher

Anna Curry

I first met Dr. Dan Foster over 50 years ago when he taught my high school Sunday School class. It was so impactful that after college I came back and joined his adult class, where I've been a member for over 40 years.

Buddy Jordan

... He got there the first Sunday, August 1975, and taught a very compelling lesson. It was very personal...

 Anna Curry

...Dan was a teacher, not a preacher. He encouraged us to stop and think about important questions regarding life and God.

Buddy Jordan

...he brought it down to a daily conversation you could have about something versus an academic lesson.

Philip Higginbotham

He always brings real life stories into it.

Buddy Jordan

... Everybody in the class was always spellbound when he would tell these stories.

 Anna Curry

...he inspired us with the wisdom in his lessons.

Buddy Jordan

...We also had the side benefit of learning a lot of big new words, which was always kind of fun.

Lessons in daily living

Buddy Jordan

What you get from Dan Foster's lessons are practical answers to daily living for Christians...

Philip Higginbotham

It's a pretty interesting class that comes at the spirituality with a holistic view of both academia as well as spirituality, as well as the whole person.

Liz Lawless

.. sharing little faith lessons, simple things. Like one time he talked about an arrow prayer. He would just shoot up a little prayer for the person in the car in front of him on the road one day...

Buddy Jordan

....You also have answers for serious questions about your faith.

Philip Higginbotham

...We're here to love God with all our heart, mind and strength. We're here to love each other. That is embodied through the life and death of Jesus Christ. At the heart of every lesson are those truths.

Buddy Jordan

One of our class members...moved to the west coast about 15 years ago. He took these lessons, and they used them every Sunday for six out of the 12 months of a year as a Sunday School lesson. They then meet every other week in someone's home, during that same period of time, to discuss these. This is a great way to use these lessons.

Doing God's work

Buddy Jordan

One of the things Dan Foster always emphasized was doing God's work where you're comfortable, whether it's afar or in your own backyard.

Anna Curry

Dan Foster was very involved in our lives. Whether it was attending softball games, praying for people, going to funerals, he really cared about each of us as individuals.

Liz Lawless

...A lot of times it didn't even include a lot of words, just your presence. Just being there for people when they needed something.

Philip Higginbotham

...One story that I remember is that when he was... providing medical treatment to homeless people, that there was a man who came up there that had the dirtiest, grimiest feet he had ever seen, and he had an infection in his foot. Dan said that when he bent down to take that man's shoe off to take that man's sock off, that just a cloud of dust filled the air. That man said, "You know, all these things that you're talking about in terms of Christ and love and the way we should live, I didn't believe until you just treated my foot."

Buddy Jordan

...when God puts the call in your heart, you just go and you're there. Presence is a huge part of ministry.

Philip Higginbotham

When they dedicated the Dan Foster library at the church, Dr. Dan Foster ended his comments by saying, "We have to keep going, we have to do more."
